What is Shell Cordovan?
Shell cordovan (or cordovan) is a rare, world-famous leather made of a specific layer of hide - "cordovan". The cordovan layer exists only in equine hides and has its maximum thickness on the rump area. One horse hide yields only two small oval pieces of cordovan - two shells.
Cordovan has a number of advantages over traditional Calf leather. The pores are much smaller than other leathers which give the leather a smoother finish and a more brilliant luster . Aside from the aesthetic, the smaller pores also mean that shell cordovan is less permeable to water and naturally have a resistance to water, however isn't waterproof.
In addition to its durability, shell cordovan also stretches less than other leathers. While other leathers may over-stretch with time, shell cordovan keeps its shape much better, resulting in a better long-term fit.
Joh. Rendenbach leather sole
The traditional method of oak-bark ground-tanning has prevailed through four generations of leather making at Rendenbach. A product of first class quality that is robust and extremely flexible, waterproof and breathable. JR-Leather is notably hard wearing, dermatologically kind and exceptionally comfortable to wear.
Closed Channel
A closed channel is when the manufacturer, instead of simply creating the stitch and the channel at the same time, first cuts into the sole to create a little flap of leather that they can then lift up. Once this is cut and lifted up, they then cut the channel and stitch the sole to the welt. After this it is closed back down and glue is used to keep it down, thus creating a uniform surface without anything showing on it.
